Washingtonians For Humane Farms has submitted language to the Secretary of State to place a statewide measure on November’s ballot. The coalition of animal welfare, family farming, food safety and environmental groups proposed a measure that will prevent animal cruelty, preserve the environment and protect consumers and small farmers.
About six million egg-laying hens in Washington are crammed into cages so small, they can barely move an inch for virtually their whole lives. This measure simply ensures that these animals have enough room to stretch their wings. The measure is backed by The Humane Society of the United States, Farm Sanctuary, and a growing list of organizations.

Update: In July 2011 the Washington initiative was put on hold as the Humane Society of the U.S. works with the egg producers nationally to create a federal regulation to provide hens more humane “working conditions.”
