Nais Redux?

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has just proposed new rules that would expand requirements for tracing livestock.

These rules are complicated, and WORC [Western Organization of Resource Councils] leaders and staff are working to analyze USDA’s proposal. But, here’s some of what’s known so far.

  • The rules require identification of a broad range of animals. The list includes feeder cattle, which are processed at a young age and never enter the breeding herd.
  • It also creates new requirements for not only animal owners, but also for businesses associated with livestock. For example, veterinarians and auction barns would have to keep records on every tagged animal for a minimum of five years.

USDA is accepting comments on the rules for 90 days, until November 9, 2011. Read the rule here and USDA Fact Sheet here and comment here
