My Co-op Story: Sue Burgess – Owner Since 2011

I live on Whidbey Island and ride the ferry to shop at the Port Townsend Food Co-op.

One day I set out to go shopping and happened to see a news report on the way. It seemed that all the news that day was bad and it got me down. I was just having an off day. When I got to the Food Co-op there was a man sitting outside playing his guitar. He was in a great mood, singing his heart out, “When You’re Smiling.” As I shopped, everyone in the store seemed to be humming this song. Before long about ten people came outside and sang with the man. He loved singing and it was infectious; we were all invigorated by his song, by his love of singing.

I remember this every time I am feeling a little blue, this beautiful person singing a song at the Port Townsend Food Co-op. He made an impression on me: if you sing a song you can bring a smile. He made my day! This was a great Co-op experience that I will never forget, all while I was doing my shopping. I love the Food Co-op and I wanted to stay and enjoy that day, but I had to leave to catch my ferry!
