My Co-op Story: Deb Shortess – Member Since 1989

I remember the Uptown Co-op courtyard as beloved by children. This seemed to be the case especially because of the fig trees and the perfectly kid-sized picnic table. While parents were shopping, kids could enjoy their chosen treat, often a Fruitstix popsicle, at that picnic table. If we were walking past the courtyard, my son often wanted to take a break and, if available, sit at the small picnic table.

The fig tree had many branches of small diameter low to the ground, easy for small hands to grasp. Lots of games and climbing took place among and underneath those branches. The branches were somewhat brittle and after someone was hurt, we put up signs: “Do not climb the fig tree.”

Eventually the trees had to be removed as they were damaging the building.  The branches were cut so that many starts were given away. I have a fig tree from one of those starts. It is my reminder of those courtyard trees.

My other reminder of the courtyard is seeing those kids, now adults and some with their own children, shopping at the Co-op enjoying the things that make the Co-op special now, being part of the Cooper Kids Club and having an ABC card and hopping along the color patterns of the floor tiles.
