On Sunday April 12, at 7pm, Quimper Grange sponsors a free screening of “American Meat,” a recent documentary about meat production in America.  The film is a thought-provoking documentary of meat production throughout the country and recent innovations in the industry that show promise for a more healthful, humane, and sustainable future for the production of meat. After seeing “American Meat,” viewers can talk with local meat producers who will share their experiences producing healthy meat for our community. They will also share their ideas about expanding the range of locally grown and processed meat products available in our area. Among the local producers are John Bellow and interns from SpringRain Farm, Roger Short from Short’s Family Farm, and Janet Aubin from Finnriver Farm.

The event is held at Quimper Grange, 1219 Corona Street and is free and open to everyone. Donations are gladly accepted to help maintain the Grange Hall. Questions? Contact Marla at 385-6924.

The producer and director of the documentary “Ground Operations: Battlefields to Farmfields,” are taking to the road to screen and discuss their documentary film in locations across the Olympic Peninsula May 4-9, thanks to the Port Townsend Film Festival.

Producer/director Dulanie Elllis and co-producer/editor Ray singer will be joined by local farmers and combat veterans who will discuss the shortage of sustainable farmers in the nation and how combat veterans may benefit from filling that need.

The screenings are free and open to the public thanks to the support of The Food Co-op, the PTFF Peter Simpson Education Fund, and Peace Patch Farm.

“Ground Operations,” follows a group of young American veterans who have turned to farming and ranching to gain economic stability and food security for themselves and the communities where they live.

It was originally shown as part of the 2013 PTFF and was an audience favorite. It went on to win the Big Cheese Award, selected by a jury of local cheesemakers, for its community-building potential and its message of solutions and hope.

PTFF is bringing the film back as part of its filmmaker fellowship program with a goal of extending community dialogue.

The screenings and panel discussions will be held as follows: 7pm Monday May 5 at the Port Townsend High School Auditorium, 7pm Wednesday May 7 at the American Legion Hall Port Townsend, 6 pm Thursday May 8 in the Red Cedar Room Community Center at Jamestown S’Klallam, and 7 pm Friday May 9at the Little Theatre of Peninsula College in Port Angeles.

Partners in presenting “Ground Operations” are Students for Sustainability at Port Townsend High School, the American Legion of Port Townsend, Peace Patch Farm, the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe, and Voices of Vets in Port Angeles; all will be hosting the film’s Olympic Peninsula events.  WSU Extension will be helping out with panel discussions following each screening.

The Port Townsend Film Festival’s mission is to deepen the connection between filmmakers and audiences, not just during the September festival but 12 months a year, using film as a tool for education, entertainment, and illumination.
