A New Deli Case! - Just in time for spring
By Kenna Eaton, GM
Well, the new deli case has finally landed in our neck in the woods and is scheduled to be delivered to our store shortly—maybe even by the time you read this!
The back story is that we also have a lot of delayed maintenance work that needs to be accomplished and so the day the case is connected to its compressor will be the same day we close the store to tend to all those projects. Why is that? Remember the watermain leaks in our parking lot this time last year? It turns out that we must replace the entire run, from the water meter, out by the bus stop to the store. This in turn will require the plumbers to turn off the water supply and cause us to close the store. And with that thought in mind we felt it was also a great day to take care of these delayed maintenance projects. Given the inner workings of our operations, we’ve selected Tuesday, April 15th as the optimum day to close and take care of business. On the bright side, we will finally have not only repaired the water main, but that new case should be ready to go!
The new case will be a big change, and I know that some of us will love it while others won’t. What’s to love? More self-service, more options in the cold side of the salad bar (more composed salads and more toppings) and more stock on the shelves, all with less waiting. What’s not to love? Well, service at the new counter will be limited compared to in the past. The new case will be self-service in the lower part and staff will serve the items on the top section where we plan to locate lunch meats, paninis and other fun stuff.
However, more self-service will mean more packaging. To offset some of that effect we are committed to using the least impactful containers we can find, like the ones labeled “compostable” since their carbon footprint is much smaller. We’ve already begun to bring those in—look for the greenish tinge to the containers. We’re also hoping to bring in more of the containers that have a pulp base, with a clear lid. Again, with less plastic and a smaller carbon footprint.
And not to worry, our staff will still be making almost all our food fresh from scratch and they’ll be more than happy to help you find what you’re looking for or heat up a panini or two for your lunch.
