July/August Beans For Bags Spotlight: The ReCyclery

Hello and thank you to our community!

We’re super excited to be a recipient of funds from the Beans for Bags spotlight!

The ReCyclery of Jefferson County is a 501c3 bike project, started in 2007. We are much more than a bike shop - we provide bicycle education and programs designed to promote active transportation, self-reliance and community connection within Port Townsend. We’re hard at work lowering the barrier to access and creating a pathway to safe and equitable opportunities for cycling.

The funds raised by this spotlight will allow us to do more of what we’ve been up to: organizing more student rides, guiding more seniors through DIY bicycle repair, keeping more bicycles out of the waste stream, and getting more butts on bikes!

We’re hoping to add three new schools to our Bike Safety Education program next year, and eventually reach every student in Jefferson County. Most of our effort lately has been on developing programs designed to increase ridership amongst local youth. Over the last few months, we’ve taught students about bike safety at SWAN School, Salish Coast Elementary, and Blue Heron Middle School, grades K-8. During these units we taught students bike handling skills, hand signals, road riding, trail riding, how to ride as a group, and general best practices when on a bike.

We’ve also been excited to bring completely new programming to our community by way of the PT Bike Bus. On Wednesdays for the past two months we’ve led supervised rides to and from school, riding with students from Salish Coast Elementary, Blue Heron Middle School, and OCEAN K-12. We’ve had an absolute blast on these rides, and we’re thrilled to be a part of getting more kids to safely commute via bike.
