Grocery Story: The Promise of Food Co-ops in the Age of the Grocery Giants pulls together the relevance of our co-ops in a way that we struggle to do. Jon Steinman reflects who we are, distills the confusion of the business model and defines it in a teachable way. The book gives us all a shared voice while showcasing our autonomy in our unique communities. You can meet the author Sunday, September 15th in the store 11am - 1pm and attend an author talk at the Co-op Annex, 2110 Lawrence St. at 4pm.

Not everyone has the time or desire to serve, but everyone probably knows someone they think would make a good board member—someone who loves the Co-op and our community and who can work collaboratively within a group. Now is the time to give that friend or acquaintance a gentle nudge.

Each month, I report to the board on how we are progressing on our long-term goals, which we call our Ends. These Ends reflect our aspirations—what we want to accomplish—and they are what makes us different from a regular grocery store.

Rule: Never get caught out and about hungry!

I spent some time learning how to plan and think ahead. It’s all second nature now, and I can’t imagine any other way, especially when I pull out my yummy homemade food, and am so grateful that I’m eating wholesomeness I can trust.

Tomatillos are fruits, impersonating as vegetables. They grow well in our area, and are a delicious seasonal garden and farm crop. They are in the Coop’s produce area this week and should continue throughout the summer and we have some ideas on how to prepare them.
